Light on Relationships: The Synastry of Indian Astrology: The Synastry of Indian Astrology
Published in Unknown Binding by Motilal Banarsidass (01 July, 2002)
Authors: Hart De Fouw and Robert E. Svoboda
Average review score:

Illuminating
Here is another gem written by Hart De Fouw, but this time with another great thinker and author Robert Svoboda.
Totally unique approach emphasizing the analysis of SAMA DASHA in some cases.
And of course the language is as exquisite as before.

A Comprehensive Introductory Survey
As a Western astrologer, I found this book to be by far the best introduction to relationship analysis using Eastern astrology. The authors are adept at teaching the fundamentals of this art in a broad but comprehensive survey, while introducing you to the language and culture of the jyotishi. This text therefore gives a Westerner a nice introduction to the jyotishi's perspective in such a way that a Westerner can understand Eastern astrology in context of its culture. The authors' periodic explanations of how the two systems are different are also insightful and valuable information. The authors are humorous, intelligent, well learned and their language is very practical and down to earth. What I am amazed at is how comprehensive this introductory survey is. Eastern astrology is an ancient, accurate and intricate art, and this text is a great starting point if you are pursuing this path of learning, particularly if you already have a Western perspective.

another insightful purview
Another insightful book by these two authors. Difficult concepts made understandable. It has helped clarify not only romantic relationships, but also given me insight into quite a number of other relationships in my life.

Magic Lands: Journey Beyond the Beyond

Looking for something fun to read to your child? Here it is!
My husband and I bought this book as a Christmas present for our 7 year old son. The night after Christmas, my husband started reading it to our son. In the five months since then, my husband and I have read this book all the way through four times! My son lays entranced in his bed each and every time with his eyes going wide as Ray confronts Old Bull, holding his breath while Ray clashes with Mother Slither as if we hadn't read this very book 3 times previously. Even more remarkable, my husband and I enjoyed it just as much - and admit to reading ahead in the book after sending our son to bed. This is an excellent book to begin sharing the wonder of reading with your children. You will enjoy reading the story as much as they will enjoy hearing it!

better than harry potter
yeah that's right...better than harry potter. i nevr ever liked harry...okay maybe a little but this is funner by lots

An enchanting book for all ages!!!!
At my school we read Magic Lands. It will pull readers into a mysterious world. It is full of action, adventure and fun. I would recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly
Published in Paperback by Scarecrow Press (December, 2002)
Author: Robert E. Cimera
Average review score:

Teaching Superman How To Fly
Cimera, Robert E. (2002) Making ADHD a Gift: Teaching Superman How to Fly. Lanham, Maryland: Scarecrow Education.

How you teach children about ADHD could set the tone for the rest of their lives. You'll have to paint an honest picture of the condition but also be very positive .... Talk to them about their favorite superhero.... Bring up the fact that each superhero has different abilities.... Then explain that people in real life are a lot like superheroes-everybody has different abilities.... The super abilities of kids with ADHD include having a lot of energy and being able to run around a lot without getting tired. They can also be very creative and intelligent. The purpose of school and IEPs is to get children with ADHD to control and utilize their super abilities for "The Good"... You are teaching Superman how to fly (p. 97).

This is the gift of this book. Robert E. Cimera is an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh who was diagnosed with ADHD-C as an adult. He views ADHD as a positive ability. Each chapter begins with a chapter outline; a case study, illustrating elements that will be addressed in the chapter; questions for consideration, for understanding the case study; and a discussion of underlying elements, concerns and strategies. The information is conveyed in a conversational style suitable for the layperson or student educator.

In the first chapter he gives an overview of definitions and diagnoses of the four types of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): ADHD-I (Inattentive), ADHD-HI (Hyperactive-Impulsive), ADHD-C (Combined), ADHD-NOS (Not Otherwise Specified). This information serves as a basis for understanding the case studies and discussions that follow. Each chapter gently carries the reader through a critical thinking process of application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

In the chapters that follow, the author covers the topics of: inattention, impulsivity, hyperactivity, social skills, educational programs, and strategies for ADHD children, adolescents and adults. Cimera also has the reader consider the possibility of other conditions or situations that could mistakenly be diagnosed as ADHD. The last chapter contains resources for individuals with ADHD and resources for their teachers and parents. It includes booklists, periodicals, videotapes, contact information for organizations and support groups and an annotated list of Internet sites. Most of the materials had imprints from the early nineties and late eighties. Only one of the websites mentioned was not currently accessible. The website annotations were quite pertinent to their content with the exception of the U.S. Department of Education site, which has been drastically revised since the publication of this book. Although there is a very detailed table of contents, there is no index. The addition of an index would have been useful.

Overall, Cimera provides a positive, supportive and informative voice on the subject of ADHD. I found the examples of students and their goals (pp.130-131) especially illuminating in exploding my own preconceived attitudes toward ADHD. Special education students, classroom teachers, parents and adult individuals with ADHD could find valuable information and insights in this book. It provides an accessible introduction to the condition and provides the reader with the educational, environmental and behavioral accommodations and strategies that can help ADHD students, their parents, teachers and classmates create supportive scaffolding for success...

Excellent!!
Positive and informative. I big help for teachers or parents of children with ADD. Loads of strategies and resources.

The title says it all Making ADHD A Gift!
This is the only book that I have come across that presents ADHD in a positive light. Additionally, it provides many helpful strategies for both teachers and parents. The only knock that I can say about this book is that it doesn't talk much about medications. All else is great.

The Marx-Engels Reader
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1978)
Authors: Karl Marx, New York :, Friedrich Selections. English. 1978 Engels, and Robert C. Tucker
Average review score:

From Human Nature to Revolution
This book is a MUST for anyone who seeks a well-rounded understanding of Marx. It is ordered in an ascending fashion, starting from his initial ideas about his absolutist materialist ideologie in his early academic years, down to the culminating work of the Communist Manifesto as an outcast revoutionary. It is structured in such an intelligent and convenient way that the reader can feel like he is holding hands with Marx and his intellectual development.

What I find most fascinating about Marx's style of writing is that while it is subtle, sophisticated, and academic his audience was geared for the masses. In other words, the writing has a strong activist tone to it. And he gets away with much of his merciless attacks and accusations against capitalism and the bourgeois since he wrote outside of the insitutional setting.

It has been a refreshing experience to read a scholar who is so daring and bold. Marx, in my eyes, completely represents intellectual freedom bounded by the human spirit alone, and not by insitutional, political, or economic structures and agendas. Marx-Engels reader provides intellectual and spiritual refreshment in every sense of the word.

The best collection we have
"The Marx-Engels Reader" is the best single collection of Marx's thought. What makes it doubly important, is that it is one of the few texts which contain an index. This sounds unremarkable, but believe me, it makes the text extremely more useful. This book transcends the state of being a mere anthology, and is an indespensible reference work.

Make sure you get the second edition.

Good compilation
Marx and Engels wrote an absolutely tremendous amount of the most diverse topics of society possible. This reader does a good job of putting together some representative readings, starting from their most famous "The Communist Manifesto", going into his analysis of revolutions and conditions in many different countries, including France, India, Russia, etc., finally reaching into topics such as family and morality (mainly addressed by Engels).

Though not a Marxist myself, I found this compilation a very comprehensive view of their thinking. It should be sufficient to anyone not seeking to write a dissertation on their thinking.

On the go mystery
by CVM Dallas Texas age 8.
The book takes place around a lake cottage and on an island. The main characters are a brother and sister. Megan and Sandy are trying to solve a family mystery. There is alot of adventure as they find clues that fit the puzzle. They try to find the biggest clue of all, what is there mother doing. They try to find the clue with special friends Ben and Wolf. The book was exciting and I just wanted to read more and more of it. It is a book for boys and girls or reading it as a family.

Megan's Island
Megan's Island was a great book with lots of suspense.
There was one week of school left until summer vacation and Megan was really excited. Then one night Mom told them they had to pack up because they were moving. Megan was used to moving but this was strange. To make it even more stranger, her mom was acting kind of wierd lately and now she almost seemed scared of something.
At there grandfather's house where they were living everything was going okay until she wrote a letter to her best friend, Annie which her mom told her NOT to do. Then strange people started to come to their house.
This story had a GREAT, shocking ending.
I LOVED THIS BOOK!

Megan's Island- Great Book!
This book is one of my all time favorites. I gave it five stars because it was well written and kept you turning. It is about these two kids who always move, and one night her mom was acting very weird. She said they had to leave now in the middle of the night to go to granpa's cottage up at the island. On from then all kinds of weird stuff happens. There are so many unexpected turns. GO READ THIS!

Good book
Laurie Halse Anderson is a wonderful writer! This book is so good along with the whole series!

Great Book!
More Than This was the first book that I read of Clearwater Crossing by Laura Peyton Roberts. I thought it was a great book so now I'm reading everything of Laura Peyton Roberts(I saw her name in an Lurlene McDaniel book which I love to read too)I recommend this book for teenage girls just like me! :)

A Definite Must Read!
If you think that reading is boring, this book will change your mind! I have read all of the Clearwater Crossing books and have thoroughly enjoyed every minute. I was happy when I heard about More Than This, the eleventh Clearwater Crossing book. This book, More Than This, was not my favorite book of the series, but I still loved it! The reason why I did not enjoy it as much as some of the other books is because at times it would get a bit dull. For an example, the writer, Laura Peyton Roberts did not keep the plot interesting in the areas pertaining to Ben. But I still fretted with Eight Prime when their Valentine outreach fell through and with Melanie and her many problems with Jessie. Also I was practically yelling at Nicole about what she should do with her problems with Mr. Roarke, and her cousin Gail, at work. The way that Laura Peyton Roberts writes makes me enjoy the books even more because she makes me feel like I am there with the characters and they are my best-freinds. This book is best for female teens who are looking for a slight romance and enjoyable book!

The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure : The Ultimate Program for Preventing Heart Disease
Published in Paperback by Quill (24 December, 2002)
Author: Robert E. Kowalski
Average review score:

Lost 25 lbs and improved lipid profile by 30%
Being the same age as the author when he had his first heart attack provided true motivation to follow his advice after getting my test results. After having prescribed Lipitor, my doctor was amazed to learn that I had successfully improved my profiles by 30% and lost 25lbs - by diet alone (without the need for the drugs)! I continue my efforts to add a regular excercise regimen to my program, but even changing my eating habits according to his recommendations has made quite an impact.

Well explained strategy and direction.
After a family member received a bad diagnosis from his doctor we were in the uneviable position of getting his blood pressure and cholesterol down....and fast. We sifted through dozens of books at the library and found this one. It clearly and concisely explains what has to be done (and not done) to reduce cholesterol and get a healthly heart. And it works.

Get it, read it, do it... it works!
After a routine physical, my doctor reported that my triglycerides were at 508 and total cholesterol was at 220. I was given 2 months to get the numbers down or go on prescription medication.

This was the first book my wife checked out at the local library. I read it and followed the guidelines on "eating habit modification" (I don't like the word "diet"). I cut out all deep-fried foods, started walking with hand weights at least 3 times a week and started taking 500mg of Niacin daily.

After 8 weeks my lipid profile reflected the results: total cholesterol went to 151 from 220; triglycerides went to 146 from 508. My doctor set the target triglyceride target at 150 to stay off medication.

The other "side" benefit was that I was able to shelve my Ranitidine prescription (heartburn medicine) which I took daily... sometimes twice daily.

Hence, my recommendation to get it, read it and DO IT!

This book was great!!!!!
I love this series so much. I always look forward to the new books coing to stores. I loved how Melanie was still trying to cope with her mother's death and how she and Jesse went to Iowa to see her mothers grave. That was sweet!

This book was a great book.
This clearwater crossing book was the best. It showed so much emotion when Peter lost Jason at winter camp. The whole community showed such apprieciation and concern for finding t he boy. They all helped so much. This book really showed how many things go on during a hoilday and to remember what is really important to you not just to find pleasure in getting a gift from others but to care for everyone and not be selfish. This book definitly deserves 5-stars plus.

These books are great!!!
Hi! I have all of the Clearwater Crossing books and really like them. I think it's neat that finally there is an author that writes about religion and the difficulties that teenagers face every day. I think this is a series that someone can learn things from and learn a good lesson from! Not everyone is perfect in the real world and these books prove that everyone has problems to face. I reccomend this series to anyone who likes reading a good book. :-)

The Los Alamos Primer: The First Lectures on How to Build an Atomic Bomb
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (March, 1992)
Authors: Robert Serber and Richard Rhodes
Average review score:

Excellent!
Excellent book, it takes a bit to stick with it, but the modern day excerpts/perspectives threaded into the book give it a good historical perspective. This is a good combo to go together with Richard Rhodes "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and "Dark Sun".

10 STARS! Essential reading
- for anyone seriously interested in our nuclear heritage, weaponeering, or the NWEPS program. Gives INCREDIBLE insight as to the minds and directions these young physicists were going.

This book is a must-read. Simple, concise, straightforward technically. You gotta read it, 'nuff said.

Fascinating
This is an incredible book. This is originally a compilation of Robert Serber's notes he gave to incoming scientists at Los Alamos in the 1940s, explaining to them the purpose of the Manhattan Project and the expected means by which they would achieve their goal. This particular copy, courtesy of the University of California Press, contains not only an introduction by Mr. Richard Rhodes (author of The Making of the Atomic Bomb - strongly recommended), but notes throughout the Primer itself by Robert Serber. It is fascinating to read comments on a document by the man who wrote it many years afterward. Be warned: This is NOT a how-to book, and does require some basic knowledge of calculus and physics. It is, however, unbelievably interesting, and worth the cost to add it to your collection.

The Nature of the Psyche
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (September, 1988)
Author: Jane Roberts
Average review score:

Not Sure About This One.
I love most of the Seth books, and this one was not too bad, its a shame tho, alot of it, just seemed to be repeated over and over again, till you kinda lose interest. Of course its interesting and has alot of good points, but takes a turn with the constant repeating of the same thing. If your an avid Seth reader, then its okay, but you may be lost if your not.

just a great book
How we create our reality, psyche, sexuality, dreams, simultaneous time, dimensions, love, and our past are some of the more in-depth points in this Seth book. Although this is just the beginning.

In beginning, my view, this book explains the "nature of sexuality" more completely than any before. I am euphoric Seth shared his opinion because it is a very important subject. Many, many people may be shocked at Seth's view of sexuality, homosexuality, or lesbianism. Seth helped me understand this hot topic much better. Anyone interested in this area should read. This is but a small portion of this book.

Some of Seth's explanations do seem repeated from previous material, however there is much new material. The way in which Seth explains the subjects in new wording tones and sentences are far enlightening. I find there is some great info regarding dreams. In my opinion, Seth has always been outspoken on the importance of dreams. What I exuberantly enjoy about Seth are his explanations of dreams and the dream reality, this is how I correlated Seth's information into my belief of Seth. By having a foothold of my own dream experiences I have correlated them with Seth's view of the dream world.

In addition, Seth can explain how we create our reality like no one else.

Something beyond the words, and the symbols of this book. A feeling, tone, or a transcendence sense that I come away with Seth's spoken, then written words. This perception been commented on many of times within Seth groups, and as I look back and write about this sense, it still feels strange and unknown. Any person having a fond love for a book will understand.

The Nature of the Psyche is not as detailed or long as "The Nature of Personal Reality" but amazingly to the point, the chapters are shorter and gave me an excellent explanation of the topics presented. I like the fact that it is shorter.

I left much out of this review but I do believe this book would be a good starter for beginners interested in Seth's concepts. A+ material thanks Rob, Jane and Seth.

Love, psychology and more--from a very wise perspective
Among other things this book proffers a very touching, and original, view on love--in its various manifestations. I cannot recommend this book highly enough!
